STOCK PHOTOS ONLY LIFE ON FIRE: PIONEERS VOLUME 2 In the vast emptiness of the Pacific Ocean, tectonic movements construct or swallow islands following the wrath of the earth or the sea. In the Tonga archipelago, two little-known animals have learnt to cope with these ephemeral lands risen from the ocean depths: the sooty tern, a seabird that never dares wet its wings for fear of drowning and the Alvin crustacean, a blind shellfish that can find its way around the abyss. When an underwater volcano becomes an island, the fates of these two extraordinary living paradoxes are linked... Eight years of filming were needed to complete this episode, certainly the most epic project in the history of Saint Thomas Productions. Pioneer experiences were tried throughout the shoot: we sent robots at depths of over 3 500 meters, we dived in sulfurous waters and crossed the Pacific Ocean from the Fidji Islands to the Tongas in a helicopter (an 8-hour flight without stopover!). The director Bertrand LOYER nearly drowned after drifting overnight in a boat battered by a tropical storm. The film, entirely shot in HD, presents never-seen-before behaviors and phenomena, from the first underwater abyssal eruption to the birth of an island, as well as the strange behaviors of deep-sea creatures.
